comfort n. a state of ease and
contentment; relief of suffering
or grief; a person or thing giving
this.

Knowing that comfort (chosen by the talented Yvonne of Yvonne Niemann Photography) was this month’s Twelve by Twelve theme, I’ve thought about it a lot these last few weeks. What comforts me and those around me? Can I close my eyes and see it? Is comfort a color? Is it one thing or many?

For me, it’s so many different things. The big things: my family, my friends and knowing that God has things in control. But, it’s the small things too:  my hubby coming to give me one last hug + kiss after already saying goodbye, it’s snuggling with my boys at bedtime after a long nutty day (and the fact that they still love to snuggle), it’s hearing my sweet Gramcracker’s laugh over the phone, it’s getting a card in the mail from my mom with $5 in it because I once jokingly asked her why she put money in the boys’ cards but not mine (I now get $5 in every card she gives me–she calls it “donut money.”), it’s going on a walk with my dear friend through our neighborhood, it’s the warm sunshine on my face, it’s chatting on the phone with my childhood best friend about the ups and downs of motherhood, it’s a warm hug, it’s walking into a crazy intimidating fitness class with three amazing friends and then giggling throughout it to hide our pain, it’s my sweet but incredibly nutty hound dog hiding bagels around our house, it’s my hubby’s smile, it’s a donut date with friends, it’s my boys’ laughs (they have such great genuine belly laughs), it’s family photos, it’s hearing the words “I love you,” it’s almost all movies with Bill Murray, it’s sweet emails from my dear clients, it’s a delicious Pine State Biscuit sandwich, it’s fuzzy socks, it’s images like these and it’s the trust my clients place in my hands to capture the precious moments in their lives.

I’ve always loved these lyrics from Renee & Jeremy’s, “Welcome to This World”

Welcome to this world
Whether you are ready or not
Welcome to this world
Come give it all that you got
Before you know it you’ll be
Singing right back to me
Welcome to this world…

They played over and over again in my head as I edited these precious sessions. Despite the serious chill in the air, snow covered ground and icicle lined barn, I just loved my afternoon capturing their maternity session. They were serious troopers and so much fun to work with. Mommy-to-be glowed like the rays from sun. It was the perfect timing. Then just a few months later, their family grew and they welcomed their sweet little prince into the world. He was just a few days old when we met and such a cuddle bug. His four-legged big brother, Emmitt, was quite the protector. He had to be right by his side, which totally melted my heart.

I’m looking forward to seeing this beautiful family again, but until then, I’ll be soaking up all the light and newness from these two sessions.
